Procedure for the assessment of LASER Systems

The LASER system belongs to class 4 and is integrated into a machine (the LASER has been inserted by the manufacturer in a closed housing; the movements of the beam are guided through the machine).

Verify that the following actions have been implemented:

  • appointment of a LASER Safety Officer ;
  • creation of a LASER controlled area delimited by protective guards to prevent involuntary access to the LASER radiation, connected to the interlock system;
  • display of hazard warning signs, indicating class and type of emitted radiation, at each entrance to the LASER controlled area;
  • presence of the personal eye-protection equipment recommended by the manufacturer and by the LASER Safety Officer;
  • absence of flammable objects or substances inside the LASER controlled area;
  • absence of unnecessary reflecting surfaces  inside the LASER controlled area;
  • presence of a key-operated switch for activating the equipment;
  • presence of labels, indicating class and type of emitted radiation, on the LASER and on the manual;
  • written procedures covering the correct use;
  • written procedures covering the alignment (if required as part of the maintenance by the operators);
  • training and information for the operators working on the device;
  • training of all workers on specific LASER risks.
